Premier Digest: Full-Spectrum Digestive Enzyme Support for Better Food Breakdown and Nutrient Use

Premier Digest: Full-Spectrum Digestive Enzyme Support for Better Food Breakdown and Nutrient Use

You can eat excellent food, choose quality ingredients, take nutritional supplements, and still miss one of the most important questions in health: How well are you actually digesting what you eat?”
A meal does not become useful nutrition the moment you swallow it. Before protein can provide amino acids, before fats can be properly handled, and before carbohydrates can be used for energy, food has to be broken down through an organized digestive process.

That process requires more than one enzyme because a mixed meal contains many different types of food. Protein requires different digestive activity than fat. Starches need different enzymes than dairy sugars. Fibrous plant foods create another digestive task altogether.

This is where Premier Digest fits.

Premier Digest is a full-spectrum, plant-based digestive enzyme formula designed to support the digestion of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, dairy, starches, sugars, and fiber-containing foods. It is a formula I look at when the digestive process needs broader enzyme support rather than support for only one type of food.

I do not want you to think of it as simply a pill for bloating or heaviness.

I want you to understand the larger question first: Is your body efficiently breaking down the meals you are asking it to use?

A Practitioner Perspective on Digestion

By Jon Cotton, CEO of Total Health Secrets, Certified Nutritionist and Kinesiologist

For more than 30 years, I have worked with people who are trying to improve their energy, digestion, elimination, nutrient use, and overall vitality.

One pattern has remained important throughout that work: people often focus on what they are putting into the body without giving enough attention to what the body has to do with it next.

A person may be eating better than ever and still feel heavy after meals. Another person may tolerate fruit well but struggle with a large cooked meal. Someone else may be adding vitamins, minerals, protein, or specialty foods while overlooking the digestive process that has to make those nutrients available.

In my experience, the first question is often not, “What else can we add?”

It is:  “Where is the process breaking down?”

Premier Digest belongs in that conversation because it supports the enzyme stage of digestion. To understand why that matters, I first want to show you what your body is trying to accomplish every time you eat.

Educational Note: This article is intended for nutritional and wellness education. Digestive symptoms can have many possible causes, and a symptom by itself does not prove that a person needs digestive enzymes. Persistent, severe, or unexplained digestive concerns deserve appropriate individual evaluation.

The simplest way to understand Premier Digest is this: it provides multiple enzyme activities because a normal meal contains multiple digestive jobs.

Now let us look at why those different jobs matter.

What Digestion Has to Accomplish Before Food Becomes Useful Nutrition

Digestion is not one event. It is a sequence.

The process begins when food enters the mouth and continues as the meal moves through the stomach and into the small intestine. Different digestive substances and enzymes participate at different stages, helping reduce larger food structures into smaller forms the body can work with.

For practical purposes, think about a normal mixed meal.

A dinner plate may contain:

  • protein from beans, fish, eggs, poultry, meat, nuts, seeds, or another source;
  • fat naturally present in foods or added during preparation;
  • starch from potatoes, rice, grains, or other carbohydrate-rich foods;
  • fiber from vegetables and other plant foods;
  • different sugars and carbohydrate structures;
  • possibly dairy containing lactose.

The body cannot use one single enzyme to handle all of that.

Protein digestion requires proteolytic activity. Fats require lipase activity. Starches require enzymes such as amylase and diastase. Lactose requires lactase. Sucrose requires invertase. Cellulose structures in plant foods create yet another digestive challenge.

This is why I want people to move away from the vague idea of “good digestion” and instead understand the actual work involved.

The meal has to be dismantled in an organized way.

Premier Digest is designed to provide broad enzyme support for this stage of the process, especially as food moves beyond the stomach and enzyme activity becomes central to further breakdown.

Balanced cooked meal with protein vegetables starch and healthy fats

What Is Premier Digest?

Premier Digest is a full-spectrum plant-based digestive enzyme formula designed to support the breakdown of multiple components of a normal meal.

The formula combines a 258 mg Premier Enzyme Blend with 170 mg of Plant-Gest™ Support in each one-capsule serving.

The Premier Enzyme Blend contains:

  • Amylase
  • Diastase
  • Protease
  • Opti-pH™ Protease
  • Lipase
  • Lactase
  • Invertase
  • Cellulase

Plant-Gest™ Support adds:

  • organic noni fruit;
  • vegetarian-source pepsin;
  • apple cider vinegar.

The formula is useful because it does not focus on only one food category.

For example, a lactase-only product is aimed at a specific dairy sugar. A lipase-focused formula would address only one part of fat digestion. Premier Digest takes a broader approach by providing enzyme activities that correspond with several major components of a mixed meal.

This makes it particularly relevant when the question is not, “Which one food bothers me?” but rather, “Am I handling my meals efficiently as a whole?”

What Premier Digest Is Designed to Help Break Down

The quickest way to understand a full-spectrum enzyme formula is to connect each type of food with the digestive activity designed to help break it down.

Food Component Relevant Premier Digest Activity Why It Matters
Protein Protease, Opti-pH™ Protease and vegetarian-source pepsin Supports the progressive breakdown of protein structures into smaller components.
Dietary fats Lipase Supports enzymatic fat breakdown as part of the digestive process.
Starches Amylase and diastase Supports digestion of starches and related carbohydrate structures.
Lactose Lactase Supports the breakdown of lactose, the natural sugar found in dairy.
Sucrose Invertase Supports the splitting of sucrose into simpler sugars.
Plant cell-wall material Cellulase Supports breakdown of cellulose structures found in fiber-containing plant foods.

This table also explains why one digestive symptom does not tell the whole story.

A meal can contain protein, fat, starch, fiber, and different sugars at the same time. Digestive efficiency depends on how well the different parts of that meal are being handled throughout the digestive sequence.

Now let us look more closely at the individual enzyme activities.

Premier Digest Ingredients: The Enzyme Blend Explained

The value of an ingredient list is not in memorizing names. It is in understanding why each ingredient is there and what digestive job it performs.

Amylase — 5,300 DU

What it is: Amylase is an enzyme involved in the digestion of starches and other complex carbohydrate structures.

Why it is included: Many normal meals contain starch from foods such as potatoes, rice, grains, root vegetables, and other carbohydrate-rich foods. Amylase supports the digestive process that begins breaking these larger carbohydrate structures into smaller units.

Why that matters practically: Premier Digest is not only for protein-heavy meals. The amylase activity gives the formula meaningful carbohydrate-digestion support.

Diastase — 152 DP

What it is: Diastase represents starch-digesting enzyme activity.

Why it is included: It complements the carbohydrate-digestion side of the formula by supporting the breakdown of starches.

Why that matters practically: Amylase and diastase should not be thought of as two completely unrelated digestive jobs. They strengthen the formula’s ability to support carbohydrate and starch digestion from more than one measured enzyme activity.

Protease — 9,000 HUT

What it is: Protease refers to protein-digesting enzyme activity.

Why it is included: Dietary proteins are large structures that have to be progressively broken down during digestion. Protease supports this process.

Why that matters practically: When people tell me that protein-heavy cooked meals are consistently harder for them than simpler foods, I want them to understand that protein digestion is an active process. Protein quality matters, but so does the body’s ability to break that protein down.

Opti-pH™ Protease — 2,700 HUT

What it is: A second measured protease activity included in the formula.

Why it is included: The formula is designed to support protease activity across a broad pH range as food moves through changing digestive environments.

Why that matters practically: The presence of two protease activities reflects a broader approach to protein digestion than simply adding a single token protein enzyme to the label.

Lipase — 810 LU

What it is: Lipase is a fat-digesting enzyme.

Why it is included: Dietary fats require their own digestive processing. Lipase supports the enzymatic breakdown of fats.

Why that matters practically: Most real meals contain some amount of fat. Lipase helps make Premier Digest a mixed-meal formula rather than a protein-and-carbohydrate formula only.

Lactase — 462 ALU

What it is: Lactase is the enzyme associated with the breakdown of lactose, the natural sugar in dairy.

Why it is included: Dairy introduces a specific carbohydrate-digestion task that requires lactase activity.

Why that matters practically: The inclusion of lactase broadens the formula’s digestive coverage. However, the presence of lactase should not be used to assume that every dairy-related symptom has the same cause.

Invertase — 1,875 SU

What it is: Invertase is involved in breaking sucrose into simpler sugars.

Why it is included: Carbohydrate digestion is more complex than starch alone. Invertase adds support for the digestion of a different carbohydrate structure.

Why that matters practically: It reinforces the broad-spectrum nature of Premier Digest and shows why a complete enzyme formula includes more than amylase alone.

Cellulase — 302 CU

What it is: Cellulase is used to help break down cellulose structures in plant cell walls.

Why it is included: Vegetables and other fiber-containing foods present a different digestive challenge from protein, fat, or starch.

Why that matters practically: Eating vegetables is healthy, but plant foods still contain structures that must be processed. Cellulase helps explain why a broad-spectrum formula can remain relevant even in a diet rich in whole plant foods.

Natural meal ingredients representing protein fats starch dairy and fiber

Plant-Gest™ Support: Why Premier Digest Contains More Than Enzymes

Premier Digest contains 170 mg of Plant-Gest™ Support in addition to the main enzyme blend.

Plant-Gest™ Support combines:

  • organic noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia);
  • vegetarian-source pepsin;
  • apple cider vinegar.

Organic Noni Fruit

Noni is included as part of the supporting complex rather than as the central identity of the formula.

This distinction matters. Premier Digest should not be understood as a noni supplement with a few enzymes added. It is first and foremost a digestive enzyme formula, with noni included as part of its broader Plant-Gest™ support system.

Vegetarian-Source Pepsin

Pepsin adds another dimension to the formula’s protein-digestion support.

This is especially noteworthy because pepsin products are often associated with animal sources. Premier Digest uses a vegetarian source, keeping the formula suitable for vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is included as another part of the formula’s digestive support complex.

I do not want people to reduce Premier Digest to one trendy ingredient. The useful point is the design of the complete formula: multiple enzyme activities plus a supporting complex intended to work together within a broader digestive program.

Why Enzyme Labels Use Activity Units Instead of Only Milligrams

Enzyme labels can be confusing because you will see abbreviations such as DU, DP, HUT, LU, ALU, SU, and CU instead of only milligrams.

That is intentional.

The Quick Answer

Enzymes are commonly described by measured activity, not simply by how much the ingredient weighs.

Premier Digest lists a 258 mg total enzyme blend, but the individual enzymes are also expressed through activity measurements:

Enzyme Activity Listed Unit
Amylase 5,300 DU
Diastase 152 DP
Protease 9,000 HUT
Opti-pH™ Protease 2,700 HUT
Lipase 810 LU
Lactase 462 ALU
Invertase 1,875 SU
Cellulase 302 CU

These units refer to standardized ways of measuring enzyme activity under defined testing conditions.

The practical lesson is important:

Do not compare digestive enzyme products by looking only at the milligram weight printed on the front of a blend.

Enzyme activity matters because enzymes perform specific work. Two formulas with similar capsule weights may not provide the same types or levels of measured digestive activity.

When Premier Digest May Be Worth Considering

Premier Digest may be worth discussing when meals repeatedly feel difficult to process or when broad-spectrum digestive enzyme support is needed with cooked and mixed meals.

That may include situations such as:

  • repeated heaviness after normal mixed meals;
  • feeling overly full for longer than expected after eating;
  • difficulty feeling comfortable after large cooked meals;
  • protein-heavy meals feeling noticeably harder to manage;
  • gas or bloating patterns that appear repeatedly around meals;
  • concern about getting more nutritional value from a good diet;
  • changes in meal tolerance as you get older;
  • a mostly cooked-food diet that creates greater digestive demand;
  • wanting one broad enzyme formula instead of focusing on only one meal component.

These are not diagnostic tests for enzyme deficiency.

Bloating, gas, heaviness, fatigue, and fullness are broad experiences. They can occur for many reasons.

What these patterns do tell us is that it may be time to look more carefully at the digestive sequence.

In my experience, the useful question is not:

“I have one symptom. Which pill matches it?”

The better questions are:

  • Is the stomach stage being supported properly?
  • Does the meal need additional enzyme support?
  • Is the main pattern specific to fat handling?
  • Is the intestinal environment part of the concern?
  • Is elimination slow or incomplete?

Once you understand the stage, the supplement choices become much clearer.

Cooked Food, Raw Food, and Digestive Demand

Cooked food is a major part of the modern diet, and many cooked foods can be nourishing.

The point is not that cooked food is automatically bad.

The point is that cooking changes food.

Heat alters food structure and reduces or eliminates the activity of naturally occurring food enzymes. In my broader practitioner philosophy, that means a heavily cooked-food diet can create a greater demand on the body’s own digestive processes.

This is one reason I pay close attention to both HCL and digestive enzyme support.

I think of the digestive sequence this way:

  1. The stomach stage must begin properly.
  2. Food then needs sufficient digestive enzyme activity as it reaches the small intestine.
  3. The nutrients released from food must become available for absorption and use.
  4. The intestinal environment and elimination process must also be supported where needed.

Premier Digest is particularly connected with the second part of that sequence.

This also explains why our guidance treats fruit alone and raw, unpasteurized vegetable juice differently from normal cooked or mixed meals. Premier Digest is generally not needed when the meal consists only of fruit or raw, unpasteurized vegetable juice.

For most people, however, normal daily eating includes cooked meals, mixed meals, combinations of macronutrients, and foods that create more complex digestive work.

That is the practical context in which Premier Digest is used.

Person preparing a meal with both fresh vegetables and cooked whole foods

Does Digestion Change With Age?

Many people notice that the way they handle meals at 50, 60, or 70 is not identical to the way they ate at 20.

That does not mean every older adult has the same digestive problem or needs the same supplement plan.

It does mean that age is worth considering.

Over the years, people may notice changes such as:

  • larger meals taking longer to feel comfortable;
  • protein-heavy meals feeling more demanding;
  • less tolerance for eating very late;
  • greater sensitivity to meal size and food combinations;
  • a need to pay more attention to digestion and elimination than they did when younger.

My practitioner approach is not to fear aging. It is to respect the changes the body is showing us.

That includes paying attention to digestion before discomfort becomes so familiar that we begin treating it as normal.

This is one reason Premier Digest guidance is not based on a one-size-fits-all number of capsules for every adult. Body size and individual needs are part of the discussion.

What I do not want is for someone to take a digestive product mechanically without understanding why they are using it.

The goal is to support the process intelligently.

Premier Digest vs Premier HCL: They Support Different Stages of Digestion

Premier Digest and Premier HCL are not the same product and do not perform the same primary job.

This distinction is important because many people put every digestive supplement into one category.

Question Premier HCL Premier Digest
Primary focus Stomach acid support. Digestive enzyme activity as food reaches the small intestine.
Main digestive stage The stomach stage. The enzyme stage following stomach digestion.
Main role Supports the acidic stomach environment involved in early digestion. Supports breakdown of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, dairy sugar, sucrose, and plant fiber components.
Same job? No. They are used for different parts of the digestive sequence.
Can they belong in the same broader program? Yes. When both stages need support, they may be used as different parts of the same digestive strategy.

I often explain the sequence simply:

Stomach acid first. Enzyme support next. Intestinal and elimination support after that when needed.

This is why I do not want someone to assume that a bottle of digestive enzymes automatically replaces the need to think about stomach digestion.

Likewise, supporting stomach acid does not mean that the enzyme stage should be ignored.

The digestive tract works as a sequence. Good supplement decisions should respect that sequence.

Premier Digest and Premier HCL bottles beside a healthy cooked meal

Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics Are Not the Same Job

Digestive enzymes help break down food. Probiotics support the microbial side of the intestinal environment. These are different jobs.

This distinction matters because probiotics have become so popular that some people use the words “probiotic” and “digestive supplement” almost interchangeably.

They are not interchangeable.

Type of Support Primary Role
Premier HCL Supports the stomach acid stage of digestion.
Premier Digest Supplies broad-spectrum digestive enzyme activity.
Probiotic support Supports microbial balance in the intestinal environment.
Galactan or Aloe Powder May be considered when intestinal lining or lower-digestive-tract support is part of the broader need.

A probiotic does not perform the same protein-, fat-, starch-, lactose-, sucrose-, or cellulose-digesting work as the enzymes listed in Premier Digest.

Premier Digest also does not replace the need to think about microbial balance when that is the real issue.

This is why I prefer sequencing over supplement collecting.

Understand the need first. Then choose the tool that matches the need.

What About Fat-Heavy Meals and Gallbladder Support?

Premier Digest contains lipase, which supports the enzymatic breakdown of dietary fats.

However, the digestive handling of fats involves more than one process.

This is why I do not want a person to see the word “lipase” and assume that every difficulty with fat-heavy foods has exactly the same solution.

When the concern is general difficulty with mixed meals, broad-spectrum enzyme support may be an appropriate part of the conversation.

When the pattern is especially connected with fat handling, the broader liver and gallbladder side of digestion may also deserve attention.

The Important Distinction

Lipase activity and bile-related support are connected to fat digestion, but they are not identical functions.

This is another example of why symptom matching is not enough.

Instead of asking, “Which product says fat digestion on the page?” ask:

  • Is the issue part of a general mixed-meal digestive pattern?
  • Does the problem seem particularly connected with rich or fatty meals?
  • Are there persistent changes in bowel movements that deserve closer attention?
  • Is the concern broader than enzyme support alone?

The right question often saves people from taking more supplements than they actually need.

Can Premier Digest Be Used With Other Digestive Support Products?

Yes. Premier Digest may be used as one part of a broader digestive program when different stages of digestion need different types of support.

The key is not to create a large supplement pile.

The key is to understand what each product is doing.

Premier Digest + Premier HCL

This is the most important digestive pairing to understand.

Premier HCL supports the stomach acid stage. Premier Digest supports enzyme activity as food moves into the small intestine. When both stages need attention, the products can fit into the same digestive sequence without being redundant.

Premier Digest + Probiotic Support

This combination addresses two different questions.

Premier Digest addresses food breakdown. Probiotic products address microbial balance. They may belong in the same broader program when both needs are present, but one does not simply replace the other.

Premier Digest + Digestase SP

Digestase SP may be considered alongside Digest when additional support is needed for gas, bloating, food reactivity, and the digestion of sugars, carbohydrates, and protein.

Premier Digest + Lower Digestive Support

When the real concern involves elimination, intestinal comfort, or microbial balance, products such as Galactan, Aloe Powder, Probiotic Caps, or MicroBiome may enter a different part of the conversation.

The main principle remains:

Do not build a supplement program by collecting products that all say “digestion” on the label. Support the digestive process in the correct order and for the correct reason.

Practitioner discussing digestive supplement choices with an adult client

How to Take Premier Digest

For digestive support, Premier Digest is best taken immediately before meals.

The goal is simple: I want the digestive enzymes available as the meal enters the digestive process.

Total Health Secrets Weight-Based Guidance

Body Weight Premier Digest Guidance
100–150 lbs. 2 capsules per meal
150–200 lbs. 2–3 capsules per meal
200–250 lbs. 3–4 capsules per meal
Over 250 lbs. 4–6 capsules per meal

The guidance applies to adults and children age 4 and older, with individual consideration of age, size, meals, and broader needs.

What About Fruit or Raw Vegetable Juice?

Premier Digest is generally not needed when you are consuming only fruit or raw, unpasteurized vegetable juice.

This is different from a typical cooked or mixed meal, where multiple digestive tasks may be happening at the same time.

What About Between Meals?

For ordinary digestive support, I prefer Premier Digest immediately before meals.

Enzymes may also be used differently between meals within a broader cleansing and wellness program. That is a separate purpose from helping digest the meal you are about to eat.

The practical point is to be clear about why you are taking the enzymes.

Who May Consider Premier Digest—and When the Question May Be Broader

A good supplement article should do more than tell everyone why a product is wonderful.

It should help you decide whether the product actually fits the question you are trying to answer.

Premier Digest May Be Worth Discussing When A Broader Digestive Conversation May Be Needed When
Mixed meals repeatedly feel heavy or difficult to process. Digestive discomfort is persistent, severe, or worsening.
You want broad support across protein, fat, starch, dairy sugar, sucrose, and plant fiber components. The concern appears highly specific to one food, food group, or recurring reaction pattern.
Cooked meals seem harder to handle than simple fruit or juice. There is unexplained weight change or a major change in appetite.
Meal tolerance has changed with age. There is severe or recurring abdominal pain.
You are building a digestive plan that already considers the stomach stage and needs enzyme support next. There are persistent unusual bowel changes or blood in the stool.
You want help understanding whether enzymes, HCL support, probiotics, or elimination support are different needs. You are unsure whether the main issue involves the stomach, enzymes, fat handling, microbial balance, or elimination.

The second column does not mean that a person can never use Premier Digest.

It means the decision should not be reduced to a guess.

When the situation is unclear, I would rather help someone understand the digestive pattern than have them keep adding products and hoping that one eventually matches.

Where Premier Digest Fits in a Broader Wellness Program

I want to bring this back to the larger picture.

Digestive wellness is not one bottle.

The process includes:

  1. the stomach stage;
  2. digestive enzyme activity;
  3. nutrient availability and absorption;
  4. the condition of the intestinal environment;
  5. microbial balance;
  6. regular elimination.

Premier Digest addresses an important part of that sequence: the enzyme support needed to help break down the different components of food.

For one person, that may be the main missing piece.

For another, stomach digestion may need attention first.

For someone else, the discussion may need to move beyond enzymes and include microbial balance, intestinal support, or elimination.

This is why I prefer to understand the person rather than simply recommend the same supplement stack to everyone.

Good health programs should become clearer as you understand them, not more confusing.

If you understand what the stomach is doing, what digestive enzymes do, what probiotics do, and how elimination fits into the larger picture, you can make much better decisions.

That education is part of the purpose of Total Health Secrets.
